What are the affects of radiation on humans?

I've been, like many others, keeping an eye on the current tragedy in Japan. I was curious about how catastrophic the radiation leak is? I don't know very much about that kind of stuff but I read today that some U.S. troops were contaminated and I know there are probably a butt load of people in Japan that have been contaminated as well. It really depends on the amount of radioactive material you incorporate or on how energetic the ray dosis is you are exposed to.

For example the troops which were sent to the reactor of tschernobyl in '86 directly after the catastrophe died in a few seconds, because the amount of energy they were exposed to caused their bodies to collapse in an instant. The feeling could be described as being put in a giant microwave with way more power...

Absorbinradioactiveve material through your mouth and lungs causes sickness, metabolic disorders and a lot of other symptoms. Of course, after being exposed to radioactive material a lot of your DNA will be mutated and you may get cancer... or not..

Radiation can cause skin imperfection, infections, deformation on the human body, ect. Radiation is soaked into the skin, and it can make a person very ill.

There was a movie "The hills have eyes" it was made on a radiation breakout, and all the people became deformed. You can watch this, its a horror movie, but also educational in a way :)

Vomiting, nausia, ilnesses, and depending on how long they were exposed to the radiation, cancer can easily be formed.
