What is this book, apocalyptic, people trapped in Australia waiting for radiation to hit?

I don't remember much of the details, but a combined group of people, including an American submarine captain and his ship and crew wait in Australia, the only surviving place on earth because the rest has been scoured by nuclear war.

They wait and watch the radiation, hoping that heavy rain will stop the nuclear fallout before it drifts down and kills the last remaining people on earth.

I also remember the American sub makes a quick trip back to America, and comes back with no good news.

on the beach

I remember reading this either in 9th or 10th grade for a young adults novel classWhat is this book, apocalyptic, people trapped in Australia waiting for radiation to hit?
It is called The Last Ship by William Brinkley short synopsis follows:

the unimaginable horror of total nuclear war has been let loose upon the world, and only one ship, the Nathan James, with 152 men and 26 women aboard, has survived. Her captain narrates the electryfing story of this crew's voyage through the hell of nuclear winter, their search for survivial, and the fate of mankind when they find an uncontaminated paradise.

I loved this book, in the end, they think it is the submariners who will help repopulate the world. Due to them being underwater and protected from the radiation. The sub goes back to the states to check and see if they can possibly reinhabit it or rescue anyone who is not too far gone. Also the part about the murders was just so sad and well done!

Although it could On the Beach by Nevile Shute as well. Both stories are post apocalyptic in nature and involve what will happen, how they will go on scenarios. I loved them both.
